GRAMMAR SLAMMER--Slam your Grammar Agony with
The Program that answers the questions the Grammar Checkers can't
Word for Windows Edition
GRAMMAR SLAMMER answers those questions that the Grammar Checkers
can't! GRAMMAR SLAMMER helps you in your writing and grammar the
simplest way known to Windows« Word Processor users. Grammar
Checkers are helpful, but they are limited. They miss things and
often ask you questions you can't answer. ("Do you want a comma
here?"--"How should I know?" you reply.) Disk-based grammar
books can help, but they are cumbersome to use. GRAMMAR SLAMMER,
on the other hand, supplements the Grammar Checker by providing
answers in a format that you already know how to use--the Windows
Help File! One click on a Word Processor Macro and it pops up,
ready to go! No office or computer which depends on word processors
should be without it!
How to Install GRAMMAR SLAMMER to Microsoft Word for Windows
Copy GRAMDEMO.HLP to any directory. We recommend creating a new directory
named "GRAMSLAM." We will assume that this is the name of your directory.
If not, please make the proper adjustments. You may also want to copy the
program icon, GRAMSLAM.ICO, to this directory or to the directory you
normally keep your icons in.
Creating the MS Word Macro to Run GRAMMAR SLAMMER
While running MS Word for Windows, Click on the "Tools" Menu Choice and then
the "Macro" Menu Choice. This brings up a dialog box. The cursor should
be blinking on a box labeled "Macro Name." Type in an appropriate name
such as "GrammarSlammer." The name cannot have any spaces or punctuation
marks. We also recommend typing a brief description in the box labeled
"Description," which you can click onto. Something like "Grammar Help File
and Glossary" would probably be a fitting description. You may also choose
any Template to assign this macro to, but it probably makes most sense to
choose or keep the "All Active Templates" option if the progam asks you
to choose a Template. Then Click on the "Create" button which should now
be in black. (Note--if the "Create" or "Edit" button is still grayed, this
means that you did not install the macro language in your initial
installation of MS Word for Windows). In Word for Windows 2, the directions
are identical except that you click or select the "Edit" button since there
is no "Create" button.
Type in the following instructions. (In MS Word for Windows 6, the first
and last lines automatically appear). Include quotation marks and exact
spelling. If you are unsure about typing in these instruction, load the
file GSW4WMAC.CLP into the Windows Clipboard and then Paste the text
in place (either by Clicking on "Edit" and "Paste" Menu Choices or by
pressing Ctrl+C).
Sub Main
Shell "WinHelp C:\GRAMSLAM\GRAMDEMO.HLP"
End Sub
That is all. Double click on the lowest of the rectangles in the upper
left corner (or Press Ctrl+F4). A dialog box asks you if you want to save
the Macro. Click or answer "Yes." (In Word for Windows 2, you may click
on the "Close" button or press Alt+Hyphen+C. A similar dialog box may
appear.) Your Macro is now installed.
You can test the macro by clicking on the "Tools" then "Macro" Menu Choices.
A dialog box appears with a list of all the macros. Click on "GrammarSlammer"
and then click on the "Run" button. You can run GRAMMAR SLAMMER from MS Word
for Windows like this, but you may want to make it even easier by adding
a Menu Item for it, making a Keystroke Combination ("Hot Keys") for it, or
even adding a button to the Toolbar.
To Run GRAMMAR SLAMMER you have six choices: 1) Run it from
the "Macro | Run" routine from the menu as above, 2) Add it to the MS Word
Menu and then click on the menu choice when you want to run it,
3) Add the GSW4WBTN.BMP to the toolbar and then click on the
Grammar Slammar icon when you want it to appear, 4) Assign
a "shortcut key" to the GRAMMAR SLAMMER macro and use that
key combination to get GRAMMAR SLAMMER to run, 5) Run it
from a mimimized icon which loads each time you run MS Word for Windows
or a specific document or template, or 6) Run it from a regular
Windows icon in one of the Program Manager Windows.
Adding GRAMMAR SLAMMER to the MS Word Menu
To add GRAMMAR SLAMMER to the MS Word for Windows Menu do the following.
Click on the "Tools" Menu Choice and then "Customize." This brings up
a dialog box. Click on the Tab which says "Menu."
There is a list on the left entitled "Categories." Click
on "Macros" in this list. The Middle list will list all your available
Macros including "GrammarSlammer." Click on "GrammarSlammer." Choose
the Menu and Position on the Menu that you want GRAMMAR SLAMMER to appear.
(We recommend the "Tools" menu. You may want to add a separator, too.)
The "Name on Menu" will appear as "&GrammarSlammer." The "&" before a letter
means that that letter is underlined and is the "Hot" letter. You will
probably want to change the position of the "&" if you already have an
underlined "G" in the menu. (We recommend placing the "&" before the "L"
as there is no other hot letter "L" in the standard Tools menu.) You can
also add spaces here. (We recommend "Grammar S&lammer" in this box.)
Then click on the "Add" button. Now your menu will include GRAMMAR SLAMMER.
Click on the choice as you would any other Menu item and GRAMMAR SLAMMER
will appear.
Making GRAMMAR SLAMMER come up with a Keystroke Combination
To make GRAMMAR SLAMMER appear when you press a certain key combination
in MS Word for Windows Menu do the following.
Click on the "Tools" Menu Choice and then "Customize." This brings up
a dialog box. Click on the Tab which says "Keyboard."
There is a list on the left entitled "Categories." Click
on "Macros" in this list. The Middle list will list all your available
Macros including "GrammarSlammer." Click on "GrammarSlammer."
Now click on the box labeled "Press New Shortcut Key" and the cursor will
blink there. Now press any key combination you want to make GRAMMAR
SLAMMER pop up. We recommend "Ctrl+Shift+G" because "G" stands for "Grammar"
and this key combination is not otherwise assigned in the installed version.
A message will tell you if the key combination you chose is currently
assigned. If the key is unassigned or you do not mind changing the Key
command, Click on the "Assign" button. Then click on "Close."
You can then test by pressing the key combination you just assigned.
If you are not sure which key combinations are available, check your
Word for Windows Manual.
Making GRAMMAR SLAMMER appear by Clicking on a Toolbar
To make GRAMMAR SLAMMER appear when you press a certain toolbar
in MS Word for Windows Menu do the following.
Click on the "Tools" Menu Choice and then "Customize." This brings up
a dialog box. Click on the Tab which says "Toolbar."
There is a list on the left entitled "Categories." Click
on "Macros" in this list. The Middle list will list all your available
Macros including "GrammarSlammer." Click on "GrammarSlammer." Drag
the word "GrammarSlammer" to the position on the Toolbar you want the
button to take. Drop (i.e., release the left mouse button) the box in
that position and you now have blank button assigned to bring up
GRAMMAR SLAMMER.
You now have a few choices as to the kind of button design you want. A
dialog box appears with a number of buttons from Microsoft which you may
choose. Follow the directions if you want one of those. Some people like
the Smiley Face, for example. You may also choose text to put in the
button; unless you like a long button "GS" is probably best.
If you want a custom button, then press "Cancel" and the dialog box will
disappear, leaving you with the original Assign Macro dialog box. If you
click on the new blank button with the Right mouse button at this point,
a pop-up menu will appear. If you click on "Paste Button Image," whatever
button image is in the Clipboard will appear in some form on the button.
The file GSW4WBTN.BMP contains a picture of the default size of the
Word for Windows toolabr button. Load this file onto your Windows
Paintbrush program. Copy the button image (use the scissors and press
Ctrl+C). This loads the button image into the Clipboard. When you click
on the "Paste Button Image" as described above, you will get the button
image on the button. It is the default button size ("Large" button in
version 2) but should be compatible with most size changes. You may need
to edit a little if the button is a different size.
If you click on "Edit Button Image," a grid will
appear on which you can design your own button. If you want to edit the
button image already there, you can do the same. If you click on
"Copy Button Image," and then click on another button, that button's
image will be reproduced on the GRAMMAR SLAMMER button.
Word for Windows 6 has a collection of over 300 button images you can
choose from. While none at this writing have the specific GRAMMAR
SLAMMER logo, there are a number which would be appropriate. Some of the
styles include ones with Smile or Frown faces (58 & 275), a Pencil Tip
(30), the Letter G (85), Page and Magnifier (108 & 171), Page and Check
Mark (160), Page and Pencil (161), Page and Exclamation Point (214),
Page and Finger (224), Page and Toolbox (288), Bookshelf (283), and
Open Book (175, 195, 246, & 277). Check the Word for Windows Manual
or Help File for a complete list.
Getting a GRAMMAR SLAMMER Icon to Run with Word for Windows
Because Word for Windows does not make it easy to copy a ready-designed
button image, some people prefer a different way than the toolbar to make
GRAMMAR SLAMMER accessible by a double click on an icon.
In Word for Windows, any Macro named AutoExec runs when Word for Windows
is first opened. You may write or add to an AutoExec Macro that
automatically loads GRAMMAR SLAMMER as a regular Windows Icon with
Word for Windows.
While running MS Word for Windows, Click on the "Tools" Menu Choice and then
the "Macro" Menu Choice. This brings up a dialog box. The cursor should
be blinking on a box labeled "Macro Name." Type in "AutoExec."
Then Click on the "Create" button which should now
be in black. If you already have an AutoExec Macro, click on the "Edit"
button. Version 2 just has an "Edit" button for both functions.
(Note--if the "Create" or "Edit" button is still grayed, this
means that you did not install the macro language in your initial
installation of MS Word for Windows).
Type in the following instructions. (In MS Word for Windows 6, the first
and last lines automatically appear). Include quotation marks and exact
spelling. If you are unsure about typing in these instruction, load the
file GSW4WAUT.CLP into the Windows Clipboard and then Paste the text
in place (either by Clicking on "Edit" and "Paste" or by pressing Ctrl+C).
Sub Main
Shell "WinHelp C:\GRAMSLAM\GRAMDEMO.HLP"
AppMinimize("Grammar Slammer")
End Sub
If there is already text in the AutoExec Macro, add the two middle lines
at the end of the text right before the "End Sub" line.
You can test this by closing
Word for Windows and re-opening it. GRAMMAR SLAMMER will install and then
almost immediately shrink to an icon which you can double click to
open. (Due to the constraints of the Windows Help files, GRAMMAR SLAMMER
will momentarily appear open before being "minimized" to the icon.
Normal ".EXE" files can be loaded mimimized as an icon, but GRAMMAR
SLAMMER, being a Windows Help File, cannot be loaded that way. On
most computers this will only add a fraction of a second to the load
time.)
Important Notice about Adding Macros to Word for Windows
In order to add written macros to your Word for Windows program, you must
make sure that the Macro Language (WordBasic) has been installed. In
Word for Windows 2, you must do at least the second level installation--
the mimimum (5Mb) installation does not include the Macro Language.
Word for Windows 6 includes a number of choices for installation.
Make sure the Macro materials are installed. If not, reinstall. (This
can be done without destroying any files.) Consult your manual if you
need more information.
Adding GRAMMAR SLAMMER to the Windows Program Manager
If you want to be able to run GRAMMAR SLAMMER from a Window apart from
the Word Processor Macro command, you must install the program into your
Windows Program Manager. Click once on any program in the Window you want
to place GRAMMAR SLAMMER in. Click on the "File" Menu Option then the
"New" Menu Option. Now a dialog box appears. Fill in the "Program Name"
box with the name of the program, i.e. "Grammar Slammer." For the
"Command Line" box write in "C:\GRAMSLAM\GRAMDEMO.HLP." (Do not
add the quotation marks or final period. Name the correct directory if
you installed GRAMDEMO.HLP in a directory other than C:\GRAMSLAM.) The
Working Directory is "C:\GRAMSLAM" unless you installed the program in
another directory. Click on OK and the program is installed in the Windows
Program Manager. You may want to check the "Run Minimized" box if you
put the program in the "Startup" Window. You may also enter a
"Macros" Short Key" if you want. The Program is now installed in the
Window with the standard Question Mark as an icon.
For a more elegant icon, install the
GRAMSLAM.ICO file in either the same directory as GRAMMAR SLAMMER or
the directory where you keep your icons. Click on the "File" Menu Option,
then the "Properties" option. This brings up a dialog box with a number
of buttons including on which says "Change Icon." Click on that button
and add the directory and filename of the GRAMSLAM.ICO file--for
example "C:\GRAMSLAM\GRAMDEMO.ICO," or whatever directory you put the
GRAMSLAM.ICO file in. Click on "OK" and now the regular GRAMMAR SLAMMER
icon is in place in a Window.
